Memories Shift

Her slim finger poked at the lake of water, and the surface burst into pink ripples. Carrie didn’t know the name of this lake. As a child, she believed fairies painted it pink especially for her because they would naturally know her favourite colour. The water was always warm. The water whispered, the trees hummed and the birds sang. Her first boyfriend said many things as they sat beside this lake. Carrie could see so many familiar spots but most had changed into something else, much like her through the years she had been away from home. She vowed that she needed to come back but knew she wouldn’t.

The water whispered, the trees hummed and the birds sang. Her first boyfriend said many things as they sat beside this lake. The scent of water and damp soil was all so familiar. Carrie could see so many spots that looked the same but most had changed into something else, much like her through the years she had been away from home. She vowed that she needed to come back but knew she wouldn’t.

Still, Carrie put her hand out into the water and slipped her wedding band off. The gold drowned in the sweet depths, another memory swept below the surface, hidden but not forgotten. She walked away from the lake, her childhood refuge, and on to find a new one.
